Take a drive on the Blue Ridge Parkway for beautiful views.

High Elevations First

In late September, the leaves begin to change at the highest elevations. Then, the change gradually moves down to the lower elevations.

Below are estimates of when to view fall leaves at each level.

  • September 29-October 9: Stay in Asheville and visit places like Graveyard Fields, Grandfather Mountains, Mount Mitchell State Park, and Craggy Gardens to see the bright colors.

  • October 10-16: The color change happens at 5,000 feet and above. Popular places to see the leaves include Black Basam and Max Patch.

  • October 17-23: Fall foliage arrives at 4,000-5,000 feet. Places to visit include Devils Courthouse, Mount Pisgah, Bearwallow Mountain, and Pinnacle Park.

Downtown Asheville and Below

Downtown Asheville, NC, is especially beautiful in the fall.

If you want to see the leaves without having to venture into the mountains, wait until mid-October to visit. Fall leaves arrive in the city just in time for Halloween and other fun fall festivities.

Starting on October 23rd through the middle of November, the fall color change starts at 4,000 feet and moves down to 2,000 feet. Take a drive on the Blue Ridge Parkway, or visit Pisgah National Forest, Linville Gorge, or nearby Montreat.

Also, the trees in the city of Asheville should be bright in color as well as the Biltmore and the North Carolina Arboretum. If you stay with us, enjoy the view from our rooftop deck or during a stroll through our garden.
